If you are considering becoming a surrogate mother, you may have questions about what happens after the baby is born. While much of the surrogacy journey focuses on preparing for pregnancy and delivery, postpartum recovery is also an important part of the experience.

Every woman’s recovery is unique. Your experience will depend on factors such as the type of delivery you have, your overall health, and your doctor’s recommendations. With proper planning, plenty of rest, and a supportive surrogacy team, you can give your body the time and care it needs to recover.

Physical Recovery After Delivery

Your body will experience many of the same postpartum changes as it would following any other pregnancy. After a vaginal delivery, you may experience temporary soreness, cramping, bleeding, swelling, and fatigue. If you deliver by Cesarean section, your recovery may take a little longer because your body will also be healing from surgery.

Postpartum bleeding and discharge may continue for several weeks. Hormonal changes can also cause night sweats, breast tenderness, headaches, or changes in your sleep patterns. These are common parts of your body gradually returning to its pre-pregnancy state.

Even if you do not plan to pump breast milk for the baby, your body may begin producing milk following delivery. Your healthcare provider can explain what to expect and recommend ways to manage breast tenderness and gradually reduce milk production.

Giving Your Body Time to Heal

Rest is one of the most important parts of postpartum recovery. During the first few weeks, you should give yourself permission to slow down and focus on healing. Nutritious meals, plenty of water, gentle movement, and adequate sleep can all support your recovery.

It can also be helpful to arrange some help before delivery. Family members and friends may be able to help with meals, errands, childcare, or household responsibilities.

You should continue following your doctor’s instructions and attend all scheduled postpartum appointments. These visits allow your provider to monitor your healing and answer any questions you may have.

Celebrating Your Surrogacy Journey

As a surrogate mother, you made an extraordinary commitment and gave intended parents the opportunity to welcome a much-loved baby into their family.

Depending on the preferences and agreements established between yourself and the intended parents, you may continue communicating with the intended parents after delivery. Many surrogate mothers enjoy receiving updates, photographs, or messages of appreciation as everyone settles into a new routine.

A supportive surrogacy agency can also continue checking in with you during your postpartum recovery. You should feel valued, appreciated, and cared for throughout the entire process, including after the delivery.
