When you are preparing to become a surrogate mother, prenatal vitamins and balanced meals may already be on your radar.
Vitamin D deserves a place in the conversation about pregnancy nutrition. Understanding what it does, where to find it, and when to ask your healthcare provider for guidance can help you make informed choices throughout your surrogacy journey.
Why Vitamin D Matters
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, which is essential for maintaining your bones and supporting your baby’s developing skeleton. It also contributes to normal muscle, nerve, and immune function. According to research found on the National Institutes of Health website, during pregnancy, getting enough vitamin D supports both the person carrying the pregnancy and the growing baby.
For surrogates, this makes vitamin D a useful topic to discuss with the fertility clinic before transfer and with the obstetrician during pregnancy. Bring your prenatal vitamin label to an appointment so your care team can review what you are already taking.
Finding Vitamin D in Everyday Foods
You don’t need an entirely new menu to include vitamin D in your routine. Food sources include salmon, trout, and egg yolks, along with fortified products such as milk, certain plant-based beverages, and some breakfast cereals.
Your body also makes vitamin D through sun exposure, but spending extra time in the sun without protection is not recommended, especially while pregnant.
How Much Do You Need?
The U.S. recommended dietary allowance during pregnancy is 600 IU, or 15 micrograms, daily. This refers to total intake from food and supplements, not necessarily an additional pill on top of your prenatal vitamin. Your doctor may recommend a different amount based on your specific circumstances.
Does Every Surrogate Need a Vitamin D Test?
Not necessarily. The Endocrine Society advises against routine vitamin D testing during otherwise healthy pregnancies. Testing may still be appropriate when there is a specific medical reason, and your fertility clinic may have its own evaluation process.
